Extra week of refuse collection promised

Collections were to be suspended on Saturday but after the meeting councillors agreed to suspend the deadline by a week to facilitate talks with picketing waste-disposal contractors, scheduled to take place on Friday.
The dispute between the UDC, which operates Poolboy dump and private waste disposal operatives came about over a decision by the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the dump's capacity.
The UDC reacted to the reduction by banning dumping by commercial waste collectors operating in Galway city. The collectors then picketed the dump claiming the ban threatened their jobs.
