The Galway councillor who was due to begin a 12-month jail sentence yesterday was last night in a "comfortable condition" in hospital.

Michael "Stroke" Fahy was rushed to University College Hospital in Galway on Monday night complaining of chest pains.

He had been due to present himself at Loughrea Garda station yesterday morning to begin a one-year sentence for defrauding Galway County Council.

Fahy (56) spent Monday night in the accident and emergency department of the hospital, before he was transferred to a ward yesterday afternoon.

A hospital spokesperson said he was in a "comfortable condition" but did not wish to give any further details.

Gardaí in Loughrea have been made aware of Fahy's admission to hospital and are awaiting further information.

Earlier on Monday afternoon Fahy had become extremely emotional as his 96-year- old widowed mother was brought by ambulance from the family home in Ardrahan to Merlin Park Hospital.

She lived with her only son and is unable to care for herself. She will remain in a respite unit in hospital until a bed becomes available for her at St Brendan's home in Loughrea.

The former Fianna Fáil councillor was also fined €75,000 when he was convicted two weeks ago of defrauding Galway County Council.

The now Independent councillor has said he wants to hold on to his seat on the council, despite the prison term.
