The G8 group of leaders of the industrialised world have offered to hold a meeting soon in the United States to discuss last week's terrorist attacks, G8 chairman and Italian Prime Minister Mr Silvio Berlusconi said today.

The announcement came after talks with British Prime Minister Mr Tony Blair at Downing Street.

Mr Berlusconi said US President Mr Bush had indicated he would "reflect" on the offer of a meeting. He said he believed the US leader would "probably accept a meeting being held there."

Meanwhile EU leaders are to hold an emergency summit in Brussels on Friday in the wake of the terrorist attacks in America, it was confirmed today. The meeting will "take stock of the international situation", according to an EU official.
