Italian rider Dario Frigo won the 17th stage of the Tour de France, a 142km ride between Aime and Cluses today.

American three time winner Lance Armstrong retained the leader's yellow jersey, finishing in a chasing pack comprising his main rivals.

Frigo, who only returned in March from a ban imposed after he was found in possession of banned doping substances in the 2001 Tour of Italy, was the first Italian to notch up a stage victory in this year's Tour.

He came in ahead of Belgian Mario Aerts and Italian Giuseppe Guerini, this trio having broken clear of the main pack a long way out.

In the sprint for the line Frigo's main problem was ducking clear of a camera held out over the barrier by an over eager spectator.

This is the 28-year-old Tacconi rider's second Tour appearance.
