A French court has sentenced one of the main suspects in a mass paedophilia trial to 28 years in jail on charges of raping three of his children and others.

A man named as Philippe V, who was described as one of the instigators of the vice ring in the central town of Angers.

In total, 65 people are charged with molesting, raping and prostituting children.

Philippe V's son Franck V and Franck's former partner Patricia M were given 18 and 16 years. Much of the sexual abuse which was described in the four-and-a-half month trial took place in their apartment, and their own children were among the victims.

A total of 45 children between six months and 12 years of age were subjected to the gratification of adults in a poor neighbourhood of Angers between 1999 and 2002.

Guilty verdicts were delivered against many others among the 65 men and women accused, as the judge continued to read out the court's decision late this afternoon.
