A man and a woman killed in a car crash on the outskirts of Athlone, Co Westmeath this morning have been named as Kathryn Devaney (24) and Declan Mc Cormack (27).

Devaney from Athlone and Mc Cormack, with an address in Ballykeeran, Co Westmeath died when the Fiat Bravo they were traveling in crashed through a wall at the Department of Education building on the Ballymahon Road at Cornmaddy. The crash was discovered at around 7.30am.

In Co Louth, a car crashed off the road at Rassan, on the main Dundalk to Castleblaney Road overnight.

The car burst into flames and the occupant, who has not been identified, was killed. The burnt-out car was discovered at around 9.30am. The body was removed to Louth County Hospital, Dundalk.

Meanwhile, gardaí have also named two people who died following a two-car collision on the near N8 Dublin-Cork road near Urlingford, Co Kilkenny yesterday.

Michael Reid (62) from Kinsale, Co Cork, was the driver of one of the cars. He died yesterday evening at Kilkenny General Hospital.

Geraldine Rafferty (45), from Ballinlough Road, Co Cork, a passenger in one the other car was also killed in the crash at around 2.20pm.

A total of 101 people have died on Irish roads so far this year. The new regime of penalty points offences came into effect this morning.
