Four deaths in road accidents and drowning at weekend

Three people have died in road accidents over the weekend and a 25-year-old man drowned.

Three people have died in road accidents over the weekend and a 25-year-old man drowned.

The man who drowned was named yesterday as Mr Eugene Hendrick from North Monastery Road in Cork. He drowned on Saturday evening at about 8 p.m. after getting into difficulties off the Kerry coast at Shoreacre Camp just outside Tralee.

Mr Hendrick was swimming with a friend in the scenic area when both got into difficulties. However, according to gardaí, the second person was rescued and brought ashore safely. Mr Hendrick's body was taken to Tralee General Hospital.

Two of those who died in road accidents were motorcyclists. Mr Declan McDonagh (20), from Doolin, Co Clare, died early yesterday morning after his motorbike hit a pedestrian and a parked car in Lisdoonvarna. The accident happened around 2.45 a.m. The pedestrian was injured, but not seriously.

The second accident involving a motorcyclist occurred around 2 p.m. yesterday in Kenagh, Co Longford, when the rider lost control and hit a motorist who was about to get into his car. The victim was named last night as Mr Kevin Reilly (20) from Mountnugent, Co Cavan. The motorcyclist was taken to Mullingar General Hospital, but his injuries were not serious.

A 43 year-old woman has been killed in a road accident outside Newry, Co Down. She died after her car was involved in a collision with a lorry on the Turmore Road, a few miles north of the town.

The accident happened shortly before 12.30 p.m. on Saturday. The police are appealing for witnesses. The woman's name has not yet been released.
