Hundreds of people who travelled to Ringaskiddy in Cork Harbour yesterday to welcome the arrival of the luxury cruise liner, the QE2, were disappointed when the vessel was prevented from entering the port because of dense fog.

Having sailed from Southampton en route to New York, with almost 2,000 passengers on board, the luxury liner was due for a 12hour stopover in Cork Harbour, during which passengers were to have had a sightseeing tour of the area.

Some 54 Americans were supposed to have joined the vessel at Ringaskiddy.

Festive arrangements had been made by a welcoming committee.
