At least 24 workers building a mountain tunnel near a Himalayan resort in India have killed by floods that hit their campsite.

At least 20 others, including an eight-year-old boy, were injured by the sudden floods that washed the tents away in the Solang Valley of northern Himachal Pradesh state in India, officials said today.

Solang Valley is one of India's most popular mountain resorts. Thousands of tourists visit the area each year.

Police and rescue teams sifting through debris have found at least 16 bodies after last night's downpour.

The other eight bodies were found scattered downstream by the Beas River that flows through the region, said a local official.

Most of the dead workers were from the eastern state of Bihar, one of India's poorest. Thousands of Bihar villagers migrate each year to look for jobs in other states.

Since the monsoons began in June, landslides, lightning, floods and waterborne diseases have killed at least 912 people across South Asia.

More than 12 million people have been left homeless or stranded after their houses collapsed.
