Over 300 people have died since the start of Vietnam’s flood season in August, according to official figures released today.

Storms, high winds and floods have killed 326 people in Mekong Delta. At least 243 children are reported to be dead.

Floods affecting 10 of the 12 delta provinces were expected to recede in the coming days as tides fall. But meteorologists predict the delta floods will stay at high levels until November.

Illegal logging is being cited as one of the main causes of serious flash-flood damage in the countryside.

Last year's floods in the delta were the worst in decades, killing 480 people.
