Five Irish students will today compete in the finals of the World Schools Debating Championships in Wales, having overcome competition from more than 150 competitors representing some 50 countries.
The students from Dublin schools Wesley College, Loreto College (St Stephen's Green), St Conleth's College and Gonzaga College will oppose the motion that "this house believes that democracy is the best form of Government for every nation" in the final against Australia in Cardiff City Hall.
The five students, coached by Jim McElroy, were chosen for the Irish team following regional and national trials earlier this year.
Over the course of the week they won all eight preliminary rounds.
In 2002, an Irish team beat the then reigning champions Australia in the finals of the prestigious contest for the first time.
