Phnom Penh - A Cambodian military court has charged the chief Khmer Rouge executioner during its 1970s "killing fields" rule with torture and murder. Kang Kek Ieu (56), also known as Duch, was also charged with membership of an outlawed group.

The charges are the first ever levelled against a Khmer Rouge member held in custody for crimes during the revolution in the 1970s, in which an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians died from execution, overwork or disease.
