Ireland and Liverpool footballer Steve Finnan will give evidence at an inquest into the death of a pensioner who was hit by his car.

Henry Nelson (81) from Liverpool suffered serious injuries after he was struck by the defender's black Range Rover on January 27th this year. He died five weeks later in hospital.

Finnan was arrested three months later on suspicion of dangerous driving but was never charged.

The footballer, who was a member of the Liverpool's Champions League-winning squad, will be called as a witness at the inquest into Mr Nelson's death at Liverpool Coroner's Court on November 24th.

Finnan, who originally comes from Limerick, started his career at non-league Welling before moving into league football with Birmingham and Notts County.

In November 1998 he was bought by Fulham and later moved to Liverpool for the 2003/04 season.
