Fermoy, Co Cork, has been announced as the overall winner of the annual Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) anti-litter contest.

Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government Batt O'Keeffe announced the results in Dublin today.

"I am delighted with the 2006 results, which show considerable improvement in overall cleanliness levels among the 53 participating towns and cities," he said.

"Nearly half of the towns and cities who took part in the league are now litter free. This is a remarkable achievement, of which the towns in question can be very proud."
