A three-year-old Co Dublin boy remained in a critical condition last night following a weekend car accident in which his nine-month-old sister died.

Connell Clarges, from Loughlinstown, was brought to Dublin's Beaumont Hospital after his parents' car was in collision with a lorry at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday at the Ashfield Cross junction on the main Wexford to Rosslare road.

The baby girl, Katie, died at the scene. The children's parents, Paul and Gráinne Clarges, were transferred from Wexford General Hospital to Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the lorry was treated locally for shock.

The family had been on holiday in Rosslare, Co Wexford, and were travelling to Wexford town when the crash occurred at a well-known accident black-spot.

The survivors were cut from the car by the emergency services and the vehicle was brought to Wexford Garda Station for technical examination. Drivers who were in the area at the time have been asked by gardaí to come forward.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old Limerick man died in a road traffic accident on Saturday.

The man, who has not been named, was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car in Cumeen, Adare, Co Limerick, at 5.50 p.m. on Saturday.

The car driver was not seriously injured. The weekend deaths bring the total number of fatalities on the roads so far this year to 211, according to Garda figures.
