Three people were killed and 17 injured in three explosions today in a southern Russian city.

Police and civil emergency officials in Krasnodar said the blasts occurred at three public transport stations. Police were reluctant to say what caused the explosions.

A police spokeswoman said a man and two women had died in the simultaneous blasts at trolley-bus stations.

Krasnodar is the main centre of a Black Sea region that borders the turbulent Caucasus in which rebel Chechnya is situated.

Explosions by criminal gangs targeting the premises of their rivals are commonplace in Russia. Random explosions are also often caused by people carrying combustible goods such as stoves or car batteries.
