Five people were injured today in an explosion at a restaurant in the western Swiss city of Geneva believed to have been caused by a gas leak, police said.

The blast blew away much of the ground floor of the restaurant in the Paquis district, as well as windows of neighbouring buildings, spokeswoman Ms Carine Papp said.

The building where the restaurant is located was evacuated and the victims taken to hospital.

Police say the explosion probably resulted from a gas leak and have ruled out criminal motives.
