Canterbury - The Lambeth Conference yesterday finally got round to endorsing a firm condemnation of euthanasia which at the same time left the door open for the withdrawal of medical treatment from those in a persistent vegetative state, writes Robert Nowell.
Defining euthanasia as "the act by which one person intentionally causes or assists in causing the death of another who is terminally or seriously ill in order to end the other's pain or suffering", the conference resolved that this was "neither compatible with the Christian faith nor should be permitted in civil legislation ".
