The European Commission has opened an investigation into Ryanair's use of an airport in Tampere, Finland, a commission spokesman said today.

The spokesman said that the investigation followed a complaint against Ryanair from an unidentified source.

"We have already had some fruitful discussions with the civil aviation authority, which is the owner of that airport, and we are conducting an investigation now," the spokesman said.

Earlier this year the commission approved rules covering aid to regional airports.

Those rules followed a ruling that Ryanair had received illegal state aid in Belgium at Charleroi airport. The commission ordered Ryanair to repay about €4 million to the Belgian regional government of Wallonia.
