Regional assemblies in states applying for EU membership should be able to address the EU directly on the needs of the regions, according to the European Union's Committee of the Regions.

The committee is to stage a conference in Brussels next month at which members of the regional authorities of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Estonia and Cyprus will discuss aspects of European enlargement.
