Asmara - Ethiopia and Eritrea said yesterday fighting had broken out in the southern desert close to the Red Sea port of Assab, as peace talks aimed at ending the border conflict limped on with no sign of a breakthrough.
Each side accused the other of provoking the latest bout of fighting, and each said it had inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.
