ESB crews are working to restore electricity to 500 homes in the south east of the country after lightning strikes interrupted power supplies.

Some six thousand homes were left without power this morning and hundreds of ESB emergency personnel have been working since early morning to restore power to the affected areas.

An ESB spokeswoman said electricity pylons were hit between the hours of 2 and 5 o’clock this morning. She added that the company was hopeful power would be restored to the remaining 500 homes this evening.

The worst hit were Bandon, Co Cork, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, Arklow, Co Wicklow and Waterford city and county.
