Ericsson seeks redundancies in Dublin

Swedish telecoms equipment maker, Ericsson, is reported to be seeking a number of redundancies from its Dublin office.

Swedish telecoms equipment maker, Ericsson, is reported to be seeking a number of redundancies from its Dublin office.

The news comes in the wake of poor third quarter results which saw net losses grow to 5.6 billion kronor (€613 million), from 4.3 billion kronor (€472 million) a year earlier.

Ericsson, which employs over 1,500 employees in the Republic at operations in Dublin and Athlone, has cut over 200 jobs in the last eighteen months.

A spokeswoman for the company could not confirm the report.

Earlier, Ericsson revealed extensive third-quarter losses and predicted industry sales of mobile networks will fall 20 per cent this year.

Ericsson was hit by a 4.2 billion kronor (€460 million) charge for cutting jobs.

The company's pro-forma pre-tax losses were 3.9 billion kronor (€427 million), worse than analysts expectations of a loss of 2.49 billion kronor - 3.564 billion kronor, though improved from a year earlier loss of 6.4 billion kronor (€701 million.)

Ericsson's sales have been hit as clients cut orders.

While phone companies slashed investments in existing networks, they have also taken longer than expected to boost purchases of faster networks, prolonging the sales slump for the company.

Ericsson says that in the near-term, the industry outlook continues to be uncertain, the company said but it anticipates that the market in 2003 will not decline as much as this year, and will begin to stabilize at a lower level.
