Weather warning as gusts of up to 100km/h forecast

Met Éireann says western and northwestern coastal counties are most affected

A weather warning is in place for western and northwestern coastal counties until 9am on Monday.

Met Éireann has issued a wind warning for the west coast with gusts of up to 100km/h expected.

The warning for counties Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry was issued late on Sunday night and remains in place until midnight on Monday.

Drivers are asked to exercise caution in case of debris and fallen branches, particularly on secondary routes.

There is debris on the M2/ N2 Dublin/ Monaghan Road northbound between J3 Ashbourne South and the Rath roundabout.

Rain will be heavy on Monday with scattered outbreaks continuing into the night. It will be mild, however, with temperatures of 14 to 15 degrees.

Tuesday and Wednesday will bring more blustery, showery weather before another spell of wet and windy weather is forecast to cross the country on Thursday.

Temperatures will fall to 2 or 3 degrees on Thursday night before a bright cold day on Friday with some rain or hail showers.

Milder weather is forecast to return at the weekend although it will be wet.
