Employers warned over exploiting immigrants

The Minister for Labour Affairs has warned that any employers who exploit immigrant workers will face legal action.

The Minister for Labour Affairs has warned that any employers who exploit immigrant workers will face legal action.

In a statement Mr Kitt said: "I am aware of allegations and concern about exploitation of immigrant labour and I do not intend to preside over a situation whereby a small number of employers will be allowed to get away with exploiting such people."

He added that the Employment Rights Legislation establishes the minimum statutory rights applicable to all 1.8 million people working in Ireland and makes no distinction as to nationality.

The Minister said he was particularly concerned about workers from third world countries who are employed in Ireland under work permit or work visa arrangements.

He warned that allegations of breaches of employment legislation, such as excessive working hours and non-payment of the minimum wage or holiday pay would be "thoroughly investigated" by his Department.

He also said that new administrative procedures for the issue of work permits were being put in place. These are aimed at protecting the employment rights of immigrant workers and making sure they are fully aware of their rights.

A document explaining the various elements of Irish Employment rights is being introduced and will be available in various languages.
