Irish companies and organisations are backing a new programme designed to reduce traffic congestion in Dublin, which costs the Irish economy £742 million per year, the director of the Irish Energy Centre, Mr David Taylor, said yesterday.

Speaking on the final day of Energy Awareness Week 1999 about progress made with the "Way to Go" project, Mr Taylor said employees would be encouraged to use alternatives to driving alone to and from work. Options include car-pooling, incentives to use public transport and, where these were feasible, cycling, shuttle services to public transport and telecommuting.

Companies including Intel and Irish Life, the Departments of the Environment and of Enterprise, the Irish Energy Centre and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council have become involved in the programme.
