Some 15 members of an elite police unit have been arrested in connection with the assassination of the former Serbian Prime Minister.

The Unit for Special Operations has been disbanded and troops have taken over the unit's base in northern Serbia.The special unit's former commander, Mr Milorad Lukovic, is suspected of having masterminded the murder of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic on March 12th.

The unit's deputy commander, Mr Zvezdan Jovanovic, was arrested on Monday for allegedly shooting Mr Djindjic.

Mr Dusan Maricic, the commander of the elite police unit, was also detained for his alleged links to the underworld group.

They also said that an unspecified number of secret police officials have also been detained for their alleged links with the Zemun Clan - an organised crime network with alleged links to backers of former president Slobodan Milosevic

They said that Mr Jovanovic, the suspected assassin, had served as Mr Milosevic's bodyguard before the former Yugoslav president was ousted by Djindjic in October 2000.
