An outreach programme to afford older people the opportunity to attend the theatre at a subsidised price has been launched by the Abbey Theatre and Friends of the Elderly.

From September to December, elderly people involved with Friends of the Elderly can attend the three matinee performances at the Abbey for €15. Transport to and from the theatre will be provided by the charity for those who need it. Its objective is to alleviate loneliness and isolation by providing friendship and social contact opportunities.

"The response from people whom we work with it has so far been very good," said Niamh Macken, charity co-ordinator. "Many of them love the theatre but the cost can be exorbitant. By subsidising the ticket price, we afford them the opportunity to go."

The usual price for the Abbey's six-month matinee membership is €36.

Those attending the performances will get the opportunity to meet the artistic team and ask questions after the show. "It'll be a real social occasion. The vast majority of people like the sense of community of going to the theatre in a group."

The Abbey's outreach and education department organised the initiative. Plays will include The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, Doubt by Patrick Shanley and School for Scandal by Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
