Egyptian President Mr Hosni Mubarak held talks today with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Mr Horst Koehler, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency said.

Prime Minister Mr Atef Obeid and the IMF's executive director for the Middle East, Mr Abdel-Shakour Shaalan, attended the session in the Red Sea resort of Sharm al-Sheikh.

There was no immediate word on the outcome of the meeting.

Egypt has been pursuing an IMF-approved economic reform programme since the early 1990s.

The policies stabilised a once vulnerable economy and began chipping away at state control to move towards a free-market model. But some analysts argue the reform drive has lost momentum in recent years.
