The tragic fate of Lord Edward Fitzgerald, a leading figure in the events surrounding the Uprising of 1798, was remembered, a day late, in the House yesterday.
Wexford Fianna Fail member Mr Jim Walsh said he thought they had overlooked, on Thursday last, acknowledging the 200th anniversary of Lord Edward's death.
As Leinster House had once been the home of the Fitzgerald family, he believed it was appropriate that Seanad members should acknowledge the tangible link with the patriots of 1798.
In doing so, they would be bearing testimony to all those who had played a very significant role in the course of that struggle, added Mr Walsh.
