It must be that time of year again when schools, universities and institutes open their doors to welcome students and show them around. Students are plied with information, advice and brochures. They are brought on tours of the premises; they are introduced to members of staff and they are encouraged to ask questions, all with a view to the CAO form they will have to fill out in January if they want to secure a place at third level. Prepare then to travel to a number of schools and institutes over the coming weeks for open days.

There will be an open day at UCD Medical School for sixth-year Leaving Cert students on December 20th. The event will take place in Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin, and will include a morning session of lectures, questions and answers and an afternoon visit to one of three teaching hospitals associated with UCD. The first 300 applicants will be accepted. Students at second level who are currently thinking about third-level options may also like to attend DCU's open day on Saturday, 20th next.

The Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology will hold open days next week, Nov 17th and 18th. The days are aimed at sixth-year Leaving Cert students. There will be two sessions each day, one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and one from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There will be advice and information on its degree, diploma and certificate courses. The college advises students and their teachers to book in advance.

TCD's departments of mathematics and physics are holding their annual open days this Saturday from 10.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. All are welcome.

All Hallows College, Dublin, will also open its doors to students, teachers and guidance counsellors on Wednesday, November 24th. The college offers a four-year BA degree programme in theology and philosophy. The afternoon starts at 2.15 p.m. It includes a tour of the campus, tea/coffee and an open forum. Connolly Hall in Cork will ring with the sound of music this month with a series of orchestral performances aimed at second-level students. There will be two extra performances of Millennium Classics on Monday 22nd also.
