Competition: Students aged between 12 and 19 are invited to enter short stories, features or action scripts for the Young Science Writers' Competition, which is open to all young people throughout Ireland. Entries can be in the form of a journalistic report, a story, a poem, or even a play or radio script. There are two main categories, fact and fiction, and additional awards will be given for entries with a marine content. Each winner will get a certificate and cash prizes will be presented in all categories: First prize, £100, second prize £50, and third prize £25. The overall winner will get a special cash prize of £250 and will be presented with a perpetual trophy. Closing date is Saturday, February 28th. WET WEB: The Marine Institute has established a Web page, The Age Of The Oceans Has Begun www.marine.ie - it provides a link for schools and individuals to the many and interesting Web sites established worldwide to mark International Year of the Oceans. It also gives access to a wealth of marine information and educational projects.
OPEN DAY: Three CDVEC colleges in the Crumlin area - Crumlin College, Pearse College and St Kevin's College - are coming together again this year for a joint open day. On Wednesday, February 4th, they will offer students, teachers and parents a chance to review options in further education. Law Places: UCD is offering three scholarships to Leaving Cert students for the first time this year. Candidates must have accepted a place through the CAO in the Faculty of Law (DN 009), UCD, in the 1998/9 session. All CAO applicants who enter DN 009 in their preferences will be eligible. It's not necessary to make a separate application.
WORKSHOPS: Workshops for young children in musical instrument making and playing will run through the spring at several venues including the Ark cultural centre for children, in Temple Bar, Dublin.
