MY TY WEEK:'TRANSITION YEAR has been really enjoyable. I've had a bit more time to think and to be more creative. There's a lot of variety and a good range of subjects; I've particularly enjoyed metalwork and home economics.
“We’ve been learning web design, and I’m putting together a music review website called Music Kill. I particularly like The Blizzards and The Coronas, and rock and punk music.
“We’re doing a Young Social Innovators project on teenage binge drinking, highlighting how it can affect your brain, the way you think, and your body. We’ve also been involved in the Power of One campaign, which is focused on climate change and lessening carbon footprints. We’re hoping to set up a social networking website and I might make a short film about it.
“This year, we’ve gone on a lot of trips to different places, including the Horizon Adventure Centre in Mayo. It was great: there were lots of activities including quad biking, canoeing, and a climb up Croagh Patrick.
I’m taking part in our school’s rugby training programme. It’s only started this year and we have a coach from the Leinster branch of the IRFU helping out.
“We’re just starting off the Get Real Programme, which is all about putting an end to bullying, especially cyber-bullying. It’s becoming a bigger problem because of the amount of people using computers.
“I like the idea of bringing more elements of TY into the Leaving Cert programme – I’m sure it could happen with a couple of subjects.”
