Early start for English teachers

No sooner will this year's Leaving Cert exams be finished than English teachers start looking forward to the next ones

No sooner will this year's Leaving Cert exams be finished than English teachers start looking forward to the next ones. The Association of Teachers of English (ATE) holds its annual summer school in a new venue this year, the Royal College of Surgeons, Stephen's Green, Dublin, on June 26th to 30th. And top of the agenda is the revised Leaving Cert English syllabus, which is already being taught and will be examined for the first time next year.

The programme includes close looks at many of the texts - poetry, fiction, drama - featured on the syllabus, as well as workshops exploring issues such as the inclusion of film.

It opens on the Monday evening, June 26th, at 7.30 p.m., with a reading and talk from the British poet laureate, Andrew Motion. Members of ATE and English teachers who wish to join are welcome to contact Kate Bateman (tel: (01) 453 1780; email: assteng@iol.ie).
