An investigation into allegations of fraud involving up to £100,000 at a branch of the Educational Building Society in Kinsale, Co Cork, is "well advanced" although a key figure in the matter has not yet been interviewed, according to Garda sources in Cork.
It is understood that customers of the branch, which operates under agency licence in the town, complained of irregularities in their accounts, and gardai were called in.
The EBS has assured its customers that their deposits are fully secure.
