An early decision on Dublin Corporation's plans for Ballymun was promised by the Minister of State for Housing, Ms Liz McManus.
She said the corporation now felt that refurbishment of the flats was no longer an economic option. They favoured demolition of all the "tower and spine" blocks," and their replacement with new housing, and the refurbishment of the "walk up" blocks.
The corporation's revised proposals were estimated to cost £179 million over an eight year period.
The Minister was responding to two local deputies, Ms Roisin Shortall (Lab) and Ms Mary Flaherty (FG), who said action - was urgently needed. Ms Shortall: said many of the Ballymun tenants were living in Third World conditions".
