Republic of Ireland centre-half Richard Dunne still has a future at Manchester City even though he has yet to apologise to Kevin Keegan for missing training.

The former England coach left the Irish international out of last night's squad for the 4-3 defeat at Coventry because he failed to turn up for Sunday's training session.

Keegan is particularly annoyed because Dunne has still not said sorry and he has again omitted the Irish defender for Saturday's match against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Despite taking a tough line with Dunne, which includes the maximum club fine, Keegan will not off-load the 22-year-old who cost Stg£3million from Everton 11 months ago.

However, the miffed City manager is not prepared to forgive and forget just yet and he said: "He didn't turn up on Sunday, he never rang, he never gave a reason and he couldn't be contacted.

"If he had given me any satisfactory explanation he would at least have found himself in the squad last night.

"But I'm not in any way saying Richard Dunne will never play for this club again. What I am saying is that Richard Dunne will not do this again."

Keegan will not compromise on discipline, even though Dunne had been in fine form before his misdemeanour and was clearly missed against Coventry.

"I don't have any qualms about what I did with Richard Dunne," he said. "If I had done something else I would have been insulting some of the other players at the club who do turn up on time, who try and adhere to the rules and who if they do anything wrong ring me up and say this is the reason or that is the reason.

"We had Monday off and he didn't even come in on Monday to make up for it. I don't think he's got any excuse.

"I've no qualms about what he has done on the pitch, but there are club rules.

"Are you going to bend them for a player just because he's had a good game? I think the answer is the club rules are the club rules."
