Dublin will this evening begin hosting a interactive artwork that allows participants to design huge light sculptures on the Internet.

The event, entitled Vectorial Elevation, is being held to celebrate the expansion of the European Union and will transform the capital city's sky with thousands of people expected to participate.

Anyone who logs on to the www.dublinelevation.netwebsite can take part. The website will have a 3D virtual model of the city where participants can design their own light show.

The artwork involves the use of 22 robotic searchlights that are placed at various points around the street. The beams of light will be visible from a distance of 15 kilometres and a new design will be displayed every 14 seconds as it arrives from the Internet.

The piece will be in operation every night from dusk to dawn and i reland.com readers will be able to view the lightshow through a specially configured camera on the ireland.comwebsite.

The event is funded by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism for the Ireland 2004 Presidency of the European Union.
