A South African woman who became a drug courier to help her husband's ailing business has been told to leave the State or serve a four-year sentence. Johanna Adou brought her two-year-old daughter to Dublin Airport, where immigration officials became suspicious and stopped them entering. Her husband was unaware she had agreed to carry cannabis valued at £30,000 for a fee until he was called to Ireland to bring their daughter, Sasha, home. Adou (30) of Bellvue, Johannesburg, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to importing the cannabis last October. She has a 12-year-old son by a previous marriage.
Judge Yvonne Murphy imposed a four-year sentence, backdated to October 30th, 2000, but suspended the final 3-1/2years on condition Adou leave Ireland immediately.
