A HOSPITAL radiographer who admitted driving with excess alcohol and causing a man's death was sentenced to four months' imprisonment, banned from driving for eight years and fined £100 yesterday.

Dun Laoghaire District Court heard that prison officer Mr Frank O'Brien (37) was killed in a collision between a car driven by Imelda Carney (26), of Orpen Rise, Stillorgan, Co Dublin, and another vehicle at the junction of Clonkeen Road and Cabinteely by pass on August 18th last year.

Sgt Eddie Murphy told the court that the prison officer was asleep in the back of, the car, driven by the defendant. He might have survived if he had been in the front passenger seat of the Ford Escort, which was heavily damaged in the rear.

Sgt Murphy added that Carney had taken the proper drink drive precautions by leaving her car at home before going to a charity function that evening.

After the function, the deceased had invited her to drive his car to her home, as she had planned to attend a wedding the following day in Co Mayo.

She drove through traffic lights on red and hit another car. She was breathalysed and had a blood alcohol level of 146mg.

Sgt Murphy also said that both the deceased's wife and his mother bore no malice towards her as a result of the accident.
