Peter Ebdon collected his second major title of the season when depriving Ken Doherty of his place in snooker's record books by winning the Regal Scottish Open title in Aberdeen late last night.

The London-born star, a winner of the British Open in Plymouth last September, ground out a marathon 9-7 success over his Irish rival to collect a winner's cheque for £62,000.

Doherty pocketed £33,000 after his 14-match unbeaten run in ranking tournaments came to an end.

Defeat means he failed to join Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry as the only players to capture three successive ranking tournaments.

"I suppose it had to end some time," said Doherty, who will hope to return to winning ways at the World Championship starting in Sheffield on Saturday.

World number 12 Ebdon will also be a contender for the Crucible after showing tremendous character throughout the week on his way to just his fourth ranking title in a 10-year career. - PA
