DIT strike deferred after offer

THE strike due to begin at the Dublin Institute of Technology today has been deferred, writes Padraig Yeates. The Impact strike committee decided to defer the action yesterday, after a verbal offer from management to fill most of the extra posts the union is seeking.

Both sides are meeting later today to discuss the settlement proposals. Sources close to the talks were optimistic yesterday that the dispute would be resolved. If it had gone ahead it would have disrupted studies for students at the institute's six affiliated colleges.

Impact represents clerical, administrative and library staff at the institute. Staffing levels have not been reviewed since DIT was established six years ago. The union has about 200 members and is looking for 100 additional permanent posts.
