Rail passengers to the west face disruption this evening after line safety fears forced the closure of a section of rail between Tullamore and Athlone.

A spokesman for Iarnród Éireann said concern had been raised after third-party contractors finished laying a gas pipeline under the line for Bord Gais.

That section of the line has temporarily been closed and bus transfers are now in place from Tullamore to Athlone.

The spokesman said all services would depart as normal but warned passengers to expect delays.

Iarnród Éireann said it hopes normal services will resume early tomorrow.
