Edinburgh - Scotland's First Minister, Mr Donald Dewar, is to have major heart surgery that will take him out of active politics for up to three months.

Mr Dewar, who was admitted to hospital for tests on Tuesday, was discharged yesterday. But in a few weeks time he will be admitted to hospital to be fitted with a mechanical device to replace a leaking aortic heart valve.
