The man charged with the murder of the BBC television presenter Ms Jill Dando was remanded in custody for one week after a short hearing at West London Magistrates Court yesterday.

Mr Barry Michael George (40), who was charged with the murder of Ms Dando under his original name but is also known as Barry Bulsara, made his first appearance in court yesterday since his arrest last Thursday.

The court hearing lasted about 15 minutes and Mr George, an unemployed musician, spoke only to confirm his name and his address at Crookham Road, Fulham, London.

Ms Dando was shot in the head on the doorstep of her home in Fulham on April 26th last year after she returned from a shopping trip. Mr George's counsel, Ms Maryam Syed, made no application for bail and reporting restrictions were not lifted.
