Large crowds are expected to descend on Galway today for the annual Salthill Airshow.

The aerial extravaganza, which will include the first visit of the US Air Force's elite Thunderbird squadron, will kick off at 3pm and gardaí are warning that major traffic restrictions will be in place.

Road closures and traffic diversions will come into force from 1pm until around 7pm.

The main routes expected to be affected will include The Promenade in Salthill, which will be closed to traffic from the Roundabout at Threadneedle Road to the Roundabout at Dr Colohan Road.

Additional diversions will include all roads leading from Dr Mannix Road to the Promenade.

Rockbarton Road, Dalysfort Road and Oaklands will be closed to through traffic.

While the diversions are in place, traffic is advised to avoid the area if at all possible.

Parking restrictions around Salthill will also be strictly enforced, and according to gardai Bus Eireann will be putting on a shuttle service to and from the show.

"In general, we ask people to be patient and the gardai will make every effort to assist you in getting to, and away from, the Air Show venue before, and after, the event," a garda spokeswoman said.
