A British embassy employee has been sentenced to two years in prison in Croatia for setting off a hand grenade in the embassy's mail room.

Damir Rovisan, a 28-year-old Croatian, admitted to the Zagreb county court that he had accidentally detonated the grenade inside the embassy on September 19th.

The explosion lightly injured him and caused a major security scare in the Croatian capital.

Rovisan, who was arrested a day after the explosion, said he had carried the grenade with him for protection after receiving telephone threats from a member of a Zagreb criminal gang he was due to testify against.

The court sentenced him to two years in prison for jeopardising life and property and illegal possession of explosives, state news agency Hina reported.

Rovisan had been employed by the embassy for four years. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison earlier this year for armed robbery but failed to show up in September to start serving his sentence.

Local police said the embassy had not asked the Croatian authorities for a security clearance before employing Rovisan. The embassy declined to comment.
