Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to an assault on a man at the base of Croagh Patrick, Co Mayo, during the annual pilgrimage yesterday.
The victim, who is 30-years-old and from the Dublin area, received slash wounds to the face and was struck with a pickaxe handle.
Three assailants were involved, all believed to be in their twenties.
The victim was treated for his injuries at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar and was released later.
Two Stanley type box cutter knives were recovered at the scene afterwards as was a pickaxe handle.
There have been no arrests in the investigation so far but gardai say they are following a definite line of enquiry.
Gardaí at Westport (098) 25555 are asking witnesses to the incident to come forward.
