An off-duty Garda apprehended a man after the attempted armed robbery of a bookmakers in Co Dublin last night.

At 9.15pm a man (38) armed with a gun entered the betting agent on the main street of Saggart and demanded cash.

The man left the premises “empty handed”, a Garda spokesman said. While he was attempting to leave the bookmakers, the off-duty Garda disarmed and restrained him.

A firearm, believed to be a handgun, was recovered by gardaí at the scene.No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

The man was arrested and is being held at Clondalkin Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

A second man who was involved in the attempted robbery fled the scene. gardaí are continuing to investigate the incident.
