Man arrested after 14 puppies discovered at Dublin Port

Gardaí have arrested a man after he was discovered transporting 14 puppies at Dublin Port without proper documentation.

Officers on duty at the port stopped a car being driven by a man in his early 20s on Promenade Road at about 12.30pm.

Following a search of the vehicle, the dogs, of various breeds, were discovered in the boot. The animals were contained in two small metal containers which did not provide access to water or fresh air.

A spokesman for the Garda said they were being transported in a “dangerous manner”.

No valid documentation

The man was unable to produce valid documentation, and the dogs were seized while the man was arrested for alleged cruelty.

The Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was contacted, and took custody of the dogs at Store Street Garda station.

The Garda spokesman said the animals are believed to be worth in excess of €17,000 and were intended for sale in the UK market.

The dogs were said to be in a healthy condition but will need to be monitored for a number of days before being put forward for adoption.

The arrested man was charged and released and a summons will be issued over the matter.
